Electric Six, Oran Mor, Glasgow

Stuart Morrison, Four Stars

"We are an American Band!" yelled singer Dick Valentine at one point during this splendid, show. Being from Detroit, there was no arguing with him, but thankfully, Electric Six are no Grand Funk Railroad.

The common reaction to them seems to be: "I remember them, they had a couple of good songs years ago." This is true, but they are now on album number ten and if this performance was anything to go by, they seem in no mood to stop.

Touring in support of their latest disc, Bitch Don’t Let Me Die, the material from the album, especially Roulette!, mixed seamlessly with the older songs. Valentine was in excellent form, maintaining a constant banter with the punters, his only gripe being how hot the venue was, as he, his band mates and the capacity crowd, ended the show drenched in sweat. The hits came early, a swooping guitar riff heralding a riotous, two-part, Gay Bar in the first half, with Improper Dancing and Danger! High Voltage, following not far behind. The crowd went nuts of course and maintained that state throughout.

Sounding like a cross between AC/DC and the B52s, they mixed rock, dance and even rockabilly, with some splendidly analogue synthesiser sounds sprinkled over it all. Furthermore, one of their encores, Adam Levine, mercilessly lampooned the Maroon 5 singer, which seemed perfectly reasonable to these ears. However, it was another of the encores, Dance Epidemic, which perfectly summed them up. A class act, they are a good time dance band and quite frankly, despite the barely seventy five minute duration, if you didn’t feel able to move to these guys, you may well require medical attention.
