The Twin Peaks reboot has added Oscar nominee Naomi Watts to its cast as the cult 90s crime drama prepares to make its return to TV.
After overcoming some hiccups and snags, the cult 90s TV show is coming back – with original co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost at the helm.
Other newcomers include Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Amanda Seyfried, according to Deadline magazine.
When will it be back?
David Lynch (Chase Rollins/AFF)
David originally told the BBC in December 2014 that the return was “a year and a half” away, placing its air date in mid-2016.
But after delays (when David quit and had to be coaxed back again), it looks likely to be later – with broadcaster Showtime reporting a debut in the first half of 2017.
Are the classic Twin Peaks characters returning?
“Those who want to see old faces, and those would like to see new faces, none of them will be disappointed,” Mark Frost told TV Line. “Hopefully everybody’s story will get some attention.”
Who will be back?

We know that Kyle MacLachlan is enthusiastic to be back in the role of Dale Cooper, as he told Deadline: “I’d always harboured a fantasy that I might be able to revisit the character in some way.”
But though officially unconfirmed, other actors have indicated they will be in the reboot – including Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriskie), Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn), Ben Horne (Richard Beymer), Shelly Johnson (Madchen Amick), Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer)… the list goes on.
Will David Duchovny be in it?

The Twin Peaks reboot could even include a cameo from X-Files star David Duchovny, who played transgender FBI agent Denise Bryson in the original series.
“There is a chance I’ll show up on Twin Peaks,” he hinted to TV Line. “That’s all I can say. I’ve been frightened into silence… I’ll shave my legs!”
He later added: “I would bet on it if I were you.”
Who is joining?
Amanda Seyfried (Evan Agostini/Invision)
Naomi, who worked with David on his film Mulholland Drive, is just the latest in a string of new actors – although details of their characters have been kept mainly under wraps.
Others include Mean Girls star Amanda, Laura (who is tipped to play Dale’s secretary), Hateful Eight actress Jennifer Jason Leigh (who was spotted filming with Kyle and Sheryl), Tom Sizemore and James Belushi.
How many episodes will there be?
When the news was first confirmed, there were going to be nine episodes – but that has now ballooned to 18.
Will Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me be considered canon?
Despite not being involved in David’s controversial 1992 prequel-sequel-thing, Mark thinks Fire Walks With Me is unavoidably part of the Twin Peaks universe.
“It’s definitely part of the mythology of the show, and it reflects the work that was done before and it will have some bearing on the work as we go forward,” he told TV Line.

The roadside cafe in which Shelly worked – famous for cherry pie and “damn fine coffee” – will be back.
The real setting, Twede’s Cafe in North Bend, Washington, has been especially renovated for the occasion, according to reports.
Will they tie up loose ends?

Unlikely. At the US Twin Peaks Festival, David said: “We live in a world where there really is no mystery or honouring of mystery any more. I would like to rediscover a world where everyone discovers on their own what real mystery is.”

Showtime grabbed the show in the US with both hands, with David saying it was the “first and only” network they spoke to.
In the UK, Sky Atlantic will air the show.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
