She later explained that the microphones had fallen on to the piano strings, leaving her “embarrassed” as the mishap made her sound “out of tune”.

Adele is part of a star-studded line-up of performers including Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Little Mix, James Bay, The Weeknd, Jess Glynne and Rihanna.

She also leads the nominations for the 2016 event, with nods in four categories: British artist video of the year, British female solo artist, British album of the year and British single of the year.

James Bay and Years & Years also have four nominations each.

Coldplay could make Brit Awards history if they are successful in the categories for which they have been nominated, with the most ever wins for British group and British album.

However, her boyfriend DJ Calvin Harris has three nominations – for British male solo artist, British single of the year and British artist video of the year.
