JAZZ at Hospitalfield in Arbroath enters its twenty-seventh year of promotions with the Ugly Bug Ragtime Three plus special guest, pianist Brian Kellock on Saturday, January 21. The group will be playing music associated with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to celebrate the centenary of the first jazz record, Livery Stable Blues, which the ODJB released in February 2017.

Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis follows with his trio on February 18 and saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and pianist Euan Stevenson present their Standards Duo on March 18.

Jazz at Hospitalfield events are presented by local broadcaster Alan Steadman who recently became the voice of the speaking clock.

JAZZ at the Blue Lamp in Aberdeen recommences its weekly programme on Thursday, January 26 when French singer Mina Agossi brings her trio to the Gallowgate venue. A popular attraction at Glasgow Jazz Festival in the noughties, Agossi, pictured, combines theatrical stagecraft, humour and a singing style that has been described as Bjork meets Billie Holiday in an unusual line-up of voice, bass and drums.

Glasgow sextet Elusive Tree will be the guests on February 2 and trumpeter Colin Steele launches his new album with his quintet on February 9. Soft Machine Legacy guitarist John Etheridge and saxophonist Theo Travis front a quartet on February 16 and there are appearances by Polish guitarist Szymon Mika’s trio (February 23), jazz-prog adventurers Alex Munk Flying Machines (March 2), and drummer Alan Cosker’s group (March 9).

EDINBURGH Americana promoters Lonesome Highway have announced their first concerts for 2017. Maverick troubadour Jeff Finlin appears at the capital’s Voodoo Rooms on Saturday, February 18 as part of a UK tour to mark the release of his new album, Life after Death. The album acts as an introduction to Finlin, whose song Sugar Blue featured in Cameron Crowe’s film Elizabethtown.

Devonian Peter Bruntnell, who has been feted by Peter Buck of REM, Willy Vlautin of Richmond Fontaine and Jay Farrar of Son Volt, follows Finlin into the Voodoo Rooms on Thursday, March 23 with support from the Wynntown Marshals Duo.

CHILDREN'S entertainment troupe Funbox, including The Singing Kettle's musician Gary Coupland, are still on the road with their Christmas Wonderland show until the end of the year. They play Hamilton's Town House at 1pm and 3.30pm today, Stirling's Albert Halls at 3.30pm tomorrow and 11am and 2pm on Friday and Perth Concert Hall at 11am and 2pm on Hogmanay.
