EDINBURGH'S Playtime jazz sessions have announced a full programme for June. Alto saxophonist Adam Jackson, who has toured and recorded with bassist Euan Burton’s quartet and is a member of Glasgow collective Elusive Tree, joins Playtime regular, saxophonist Martin Kershaw in a quintet on Thursday, June 1. Tenor saxophonist Phil Bancroft leads a tribute to one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, Sonny Rollins on Thursday, June 15, and the Playtime Quartet, featuring Kershaw, guitarist Graeme Stephen, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft, will appear on Thursday, June 29. The Playtime sessions take place fortnightly in The Outhouse, Broughton Street Lane, Edinburgh and the music begins at 8:00pm.

SUPPORTERS of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra are invited to an open rehearsal of the penultimate concert of the season at the RSNO Centre in Glasgow on Thursday for an hour between 11.30am and 12.30pm, when Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Sondergard, pictured, will working with the musicians on the Fifth Symphony of Sibelius. Anyone who wishes to attend must register before noon tomorrow by sending an email to openrehearsal@rsno.org.uk.
Attendees are asked to arrive ten minutes before 11.30am as the doors will be closed at that time so that the rehearsal can progress. They are encouraged to use social media like Facebook and Twitter to comment, live, on the experience during the rehearsal, using the hashtag #RSNO and Twitter handle @rsno.
Friday and Saturday's concerts at Edinburgh's Usher Hall and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall culminate in the symphony, in another intriguing programme directed by Sondergard. Opening with more Sibelius, the concert includes Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston, and Beethoven's Leonore Overture No3.

THE RICHARD Michael Jazz Summer Course goes ahead at Kilgraston School near Perth from Sunday, July 2 to Friday, July 7. The course, which is overseen by Michael, the long-time musical director of Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, is open to singers and players of all instruments, of all ages and all levels of proficiency. No previous jazz experience is necessary.
Participants will be coached by some of the country’s finest jazz educators, including bassist Mario Caribe, drummer Tom Gordon, saxophonist Gordon McNeil, and pianist Euan Stevenson, and will gain performance experience, as well as developing skills and confidence, in supportive groups.
