MORVERN Graham, a second year HND Illustration student at Edinburgh College, will act as a Young Judge as part of the 2018 Schools Poster Competition for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

She will judge the annual competition alongside chief executive Shona McCarthy, artist Ursula Kam-Ling Cheng and others from the Creative Learning department of City of Edinburgh Council, Virgin Money and Dynamic Earth.

Shona McCarthy said: "This is the really fun phase of the competition when we get to see the amazing creativity of young artists in Scotland as they submit their entries.

"Last year’s competition saw an impressive 5,000 entries from 187 schools from schools across Scotland, and we are hoping to see young people from all 32 local authority areas get involved.

"We are delighted to welcome Morvern as our Young Judge in this special year for young people in Scotland “

The Fringe Society is working with illustrator and artist Ursula Kam-Ling Cheng as Champion Artist for this year’s competition.

The competition is open to all schoolchildren in Scotland from Primary 1 to Senior 6, and winners will be selected from three different age categories: Primary 1 – 3, Primary 4 –7, and Senior 1 – 6.

One overall winner will be selected in each age category, alongside 14 regional winners.

The three winning designs will be feature as the official posters of the 2018 Fringe and appear in an exhibition, alongside 150 other shortlisted entries, that will take place at Dynamic Earth between June and August 2018.

THE SPECTRA festival of light in Aberdeen drew more than 91,000 visits to over 30 installations across three sites in the city.

This is more than the 65,000 visits registered to the 2017 festival.

Seb Lee-Delisle’s Lightning Strikes and Lightbombing by SOLA was staged at Marischal College; while St Nicholas Kirk was transformed by OctopusGarden by RaumZeitPiraten and Sun at Night by David Henkel inside the Kirk.

Union Terrace Garden was the location of theinstallations Wave-Field by Lateral Office and Light Battle by Venividimultiplex.

Councillor Marie Boulton said: “Aberdeen has really taken Spectra to its heart, and the sights in the city centre over the four days were absolutely incredible, with the streets, Marischal College/Anatomy Rooms, Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting and Union Terrace Gardens full of friends and families enjoying the occasion."

THE CITIZENS Theatre in Glasgow has released casting details for its forthcoming co-production with Home, Manchester, of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which runs from 13 April to 5 May at the Citizens Theatre.

George Costigan, who is best known for portraying Bob in Alan Clarke’s 1987 film Rita, Sue and Bob Too, leads a cast of five.

Lorn Macdonald plays Edmund Tyrone – a character modelled on the playwright.

Bríd Ní Neachtain is to play the role of the troubled wife and mother Mary Cavan Tyrone.

They will be joined by Sam Phillips as the couple’s elder son, James Tyrone Jr.

The cast is completed by Dani Heron as Cathleen.

Rehearsing and opening at the Citizens Theatre, the production will play at co-producers HOME, Manchester from 9 – 26 May, following their previous successful collaboration on Endgame in 2015.
