THE latest movie starring Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald is to open this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Puzzle will be the opening gala of the 72nd festival on June 20.

The festival said the movie has a "spellbinding performance" from Macdonald.

She plays Agnes, a character whose quiet life changes when she receives a jigsaw puzzle as a gift.

Irrfan Khan plays a charismatic puzzle master, Robert, in the movie directed by Marc Turtletaub.

The film is set to be released in the UK by Sony Pictures this summer.

Ms Macdonald and Turtletaub are expected to attend the festival.

The full programme of the 72nd Edinburgh International Film Festival will be announced on May 23.
