A NEW exhibition at the Hunterian museum and gallery at the University of Glasgow, will mark 300 years since the birth of its founder, Dr William Hunter.

Dr Hunter lived from 1718 to 1783 and it is his collections which formed the basis of the museum and gallery at the university.

William Hunter and the Anatomy of the Modern Museum opens on 28 September.

The exhibition "not only offers a critical examination of Hunter - a man of exceptional vision who saw no boundaries between art and science, but explores his life, character and career as well as his research, collection and links to Glasgow."

Hunter’s original collection has survived largely intact.

More than 400 items will be on display including: fossils; anatomical specimens and preparations; paintings, drawings and prints; rare books and manuscripts; ethnographical objects; rocks and mineral specimens; coins and medals; shells, corals, beetles, butterflies and examples of taxidermy.

The majority come from The Hunterian, and Archives and Special Collections at the University of Glasgow Library, where Hunter’s collection of books and manuscripts is kept.

Key loans include a life size figure from the Royal Academy of Arts in London and Johan Zoffany’s painting William Hunter Lecturing that shows Hunter delivering an anatomy class, on loan from the Royal College of Physicians in London.

THE EXHIBITION "Free The Pussy!" curated by Tamsyn Challenger and featuring work by Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono, Billy Chyldish and John Keane among others, has been extended at the Summerhall venue in Edinburgh until the 21 October.

The show is an archive of global protest art made in opposition to the jailing of two members of the Russian punk activist group Pussy Riot in 2012 for performing their Punk Prayer in the Moscow Russian Orthodox Church.

This exhibition was concurrent with Pussy Riot's residency at Summerhall this summer.

They performed their "gig-theatre-documentary" show Riot Days in the Dissection Room for ten nights: an adaptation of Maria Alyokhina's book of the same name which charts her experiences of protest and then being imprisoned in 2012.

A new show opens at Summerhall in early October.

Graeme Todd’s exhibition Street Hermit is the first survey of the artist’s work to be presented in Scotland since his solo show at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh in 2000.

The exhibition at will feature work from key periods in the development of Todd’s art, including paintings from the ‘Street Hermit’ series – from which the exhibition takes its name – produced in 2016 while on a residency at the Eremo Santa Maria Maddalena on Monteluco in the Appennine Mountains of Umbria, and as a guest of the Sol LeWitt studio in nearby Spoleto.

As part of his exhibition Graeme Todd has designated one of the rooms at Summerhall the Hermit House and has invited fellow artists Dr Norman Shaw, Eddie Summerton and Liz Adamson to exhibit there.
