River City star Stephen Purdon has swapped the cobbled streets of Shieldinch to fight zombies for his latest acting role.

The popular soap actor will appear in the second season of the hit Amazon Prime and YouTube show, Cops and Monsters, alongside Ellen Patterson.

The team behind the programme were thrilled when Purdon agreed to star in the second season. Creator Fraser Coull said: “We had this fantastic storyline from the amazing Debbie Moon and we were so excited about that.

“So when Stephen agreed to be part of the show, we were thrilled, he has so much experience and brought so much energy to the shoot.

“Stephen and Ellen worked so well together and we look forward to filming more.”

On Hallowe’en the project launched its bid to secure funding for season two.

An exclusive preview screening was recently held at The Griffin pub in Glasgow, with Purdon and his co-stars meeting fans and potential sponsors.

The Cops and Monsters production team need £4000 to fund episode two which has been written by BAFTA winning writer, Laura Anne Anderson.

“We hope we can not only raise the £4000 to shoot episode two but also get as close as possible to £25,000 so we can shoot all remaining five, 20 minute episodes,” added Fraser Coull.

Season one was completely crowdfunded between 2015 and 2017, as Coull and the team raised £15,000 in order to produce eight episodes - allowing the creative team to hire local actors, crew, filmmakers, costume designers, prop designers, hair and makeup specialists, the editing of each episode, visual effects, sound design and music.

Set in the near-future when vampires, werewolves and zombies are a part of everyday society, the show follows Maya Hedges (played by Ellen Pattersonas) as she navigates through this world, protecting the subnatural community either as a member of the Paranormal Investigation Team Scotland (PITS) or their replacements, the SuPernatural Identification Executive Regiment Scotland (SPIDERS) at the start of season two.

On the show's rising popularity and online cult status, Coull said: “The team has been working hard since series one was taken on by Amazon Prime UK and US last October, raising awareness of the show outside of Scotland and working with some of the best writers in the country for season two.”

The team hopes to raise more funds through Kickstarter - offering sponsorship perks to businesses, walk-on roles, signed scripts, DVDs, a chance to be a monster in the episode and more.

Cops and Monsters is available to watch on Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video.
