HAVING made the Oscar-nominated charmer Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino makes a bizarre detour into horror with a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 shocker. Dakota Johnson plays Susie, the young American who has dreamed of studying at a cutting edge Berlin dance academy under the enigmatic Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton, playing several parts). There is more to this place than pirouettes and ballet shoes, however, as Susie is about to find out. Suspiria sways between the grotesquely violent and the just plain daft. A reminder, if one was needed, that nothing good ever came of modern dance.

SCHOOL is in for the summer as a group of unemployed French youths attend a novel writing class led by Parisian author Olivia Dejazet. In trying to find a story, the class discusses what the once prosperous town of La Ciotat used to be like before the jobs went. Antoine (Matthieu Lucci), is only too quick to blame the decline of the town, and by extension France, on those he believes do not share traditional French “values” – an attitude that shocks Olivia to her cosmopolitan core. Director Laurent Cantet (The Class) lets his tale unfold slowly and satisfyingly. If his picture is guilty of being a little gabby, it has a lot to say.
