Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse (PG)****

Dirs: Peter Ramsey,Bob Persichetti, Rodney Rothman

Voices: Shameik Moore, Nicholas Cage, Liev Schreiber, Hailee Steinfeld

Runtime: 117 minutes

THE idea at the core of this animated version of Spider-Man is that every generation and universe has its Spidey, and in today’s Brooklyn the power/responsibility burden falls to black teenager Miles Morales. It is one thing to find out you are Spider-Man, however, another to learn the ropes. Fortunately for Miles (Shameik Moore), help is out there – eventually. Smart, funny, and slickly animated, though younger cinemagoers might have a problem tuning into the relatively complex story. Keep an ear cocked for the arrival of Nicolas Cage as Spider Man-Noir.

Mortal Engines (12A)**

Dir: Christian Rivers

With: Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang

Runtime: 128 minutes

LONDON as a giant predator city, devouring small towns, their populations and assets … novelist Philip Reeves’ vision of a post-apocalyptic world deserves to be played out on the big screen. Who better to do it than Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the writing team behind The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings? While they have sliced and diced the story into manageable parts a lot of prior knowledge is still assumed, and newcomers may find themselves struggling to care who wins in the battle of the cities versus the settlements. Awesome visuals, though, and Hera Hilmar makes an impressive heroine.
