ASTON Merrygold has unfinished business with Strictly.
The former JLS star had barely put a foot wrong in the 2017 series when he suddenly found himself in the dreaded dance off, and kicked off the show at the half-way point.
Bookies had the young singer as a favourite to win from the start and of all the styles of dance performed in the show, Aston had achieved the highest marks for four of them.
But Aston fans will be delighted to know he is back, for one night only, in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special on Christmas Day. Here's his take on the show
What made you want to return to the dancefloor this year?
I feel like I have unfinished business. I wanted to get through as many weeks as possible and do all the dance styles and routines.
Have you carried on dancing since you left the competition?
I have! I do it every single day but it’s nice to have different tricks and styles in the arsenal when performing so I try to add different things. I’ve been on tour with two former Strictly champions as well – Louis Smith and Harry Judd. I’m joining them and another Strictly champion, Jay McGuiness, in January in London’s West End. I’m continuing to dance more than ever.
How’s it to be back training with your partner Janette Manrara again?
Honestly, it’s like I never left. We picked up where we left off. It was cut too short. We’re happy to be back in the rehearsal room. Janette’s great and I’m very lucky to be able to continue the partnership we made and see if the jive works.
Who’s your biggest competition?
Caroline [Flack] won – she’s everyone’s competition! She’s the champion. To be the best you have to beat the best.
Who will you be bringing to the show to cheer you on?
My fiancé, Sarah and then it’s all to play for. Whoever offers the best Christmas present.
How much training have you been able to do?
Four days so far. It’s been very chilled. I enjoy the pressure when we get on the floor.
Name three past Strictly contestants you’d like to have round for Christmas dinner?
That’s easy – Harry, Louis and Jay. I’m going to be with them for the best part of the next six months anyway.
What will you be doing on Christmas day?
Watching Strictly.
What is the best thing about Christmas?
This year it’s our son’s first Christmas. We’re going to start our own new Christmas traditions – so it feels like it is exciting all over again.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
