Darren Walsh on his new show S’pun
Tell us about your Fringe show
I invite the audience to ‘spin’ a virtual wheel-of-fortune on screen to receive prizes. Apart from that, there’s no ‘narrative’, just nonsense.
Best thing about the Fringe?
It’s such a privilege to be able to do it.
Worst thing about the Fringe?
It’s an emotional rollercoaster, definitely not a normal thing for a human to put themselves through.
How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?
About 5.
Favourite Fringe venue?
Definitely the Pleasance Courtyard at 8:30pm
Best Fringe memory?
Before I really started stand-up, I saw Kevin Eldon’s show “Kevin is titting about” in 2010 and it blew my mind.
Best heckle?
“What’s the weather like up there?”. Not really. If you see me don’t ever say that.
Craziest on stage experience?
I once performed in an episode of ‘The Only Way is Essex’, but it got cut. I remembered Joey Essex kept saying “I don’t get it”. He genuinely didn’t.
What’s on your rider?
A banana. I love bananas. I used to see tennis players eating them in between sets and wonder what the hell was going on. But now I realise what a great source of energy they are.
How do you wind down after a show?
Unfortunately, I have to pack all my props up off the floor. Maybe one day I’ll be able to pay someone to do it for me. or just write jokes that don’t require props.
What do you love about Scotland?
There’s definitely a darker sense of humour up here, which I like.
What do you like about Edinburgh?
The stone buildings and rolling hills. It’s really is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?
Voted to stay in the EU.
What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?
Everything that a London crowd doesn’t get, and vice versa.
Favourite joke?
I heard this on the Adam & Joe show 6Music radio show a few years ago, I’m afraid I don’t know who wrote it, it was one of their listeners who sent it in.
Q: Why did the Puma get on so well with the other Pumas?
A: He had a good sense of Puma
I am the the only person who likes this.
Favourite Scottish food/drink?
Tattie scones. In Ireland they call them Potato farls. Whoever invented them, they’re great in a fry-up.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
