Kristen Stewart has declared the discussion around gender in the film industry “boring” – and those who want to change things should “do something” about it.

The actress, most famous for her role in Twilight, was speaking at Sundance Film Festival, where she was promoting her new movie Certain Women.

Asked for her thoughts on roles for women in the film industry, she told Variety: “If you’re bored or you feel like there’s a lack of something in front of you… Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something. Go write something, go do something.

“And that’s easy for me to say, like – f***, it is hard to get movies made, it’s a huge luxury, it’s like – who gets to just make movies?

“But that subject is just like so prevalently everywhere right now, and it’s boring.”

The US magazine originally implied that her comments referred to the lack of racial diversity in the film industry rather than gender inequality.

Variety has now been forced to issue a correction and an apology after posting the video with a misleading headline, indicating that she found the Oscars diversity controversy “boring”.

A longer version put her remarks into context, including the interviewer’s question.

On the question of whether the film industry had made progress on gender equality, she argued that “it’s expanding quickly, on so many levels” – despite a historically “narrow view”.

She added: “It’s hard for me to speak to that because I’m – it’s awkward. I’m so f****** lucky and so stimulated and driven and not bored, and I have something in front of me all the time so it sounds weird for me to sit around and be like: It’s not fair.

“It’s like – guys make more money because their movies make more money… it makes sense.”
