Winona Ryder has insisted “nothing will ever replace movie theatres” despite having a lead role in a new Netflix series.
The actress is starring in an eight-part supernatural thriller called Stranger Things, which is being released on the streaming service on Friday.
Winona, 44, said she had not ruled out working in movies again but much of the entertainment industry’s best work was being produced as television series.

She told the Press Association: “I just go where the material is. I really don’t care where it’s shown.
“I love movie theatres and nothing will ever replace movie theatres. But the fact is the business has changed and they’re making a lot of great stuff on TV that would have been maybe movies back in my day.
“But I go where the good stuff is and that happened to be this.”

Winona, who plays a mother hunting for her missing son in Stranger Things, was previously engaged to her Edward Scissorhands co-star Johnny Depp in the early 1990s.
Last month she said Johnny was “never abusive” during their relationship after he was accused of domestic violence by his estranged wife Amber Heard.
She told Time magazine: “I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said.
“He was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.
All eight episodes of Stranger Things will be available to watch on Netflix from July 15.
