IRISH Americana-bluegrass sextet Rackhouse Pilfer play concerts in Paisley, Edinburgh and New Galloway during March on a UK tour to preview material from the follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 album, Love and Havoc. As well as becoming festival favourites in Europe the group, who formed after a session round the fire in McGarrigles bar in Sligo, have made a big impression in the home of country music. Brad Jones, who has worked with Steve Earle, John Prine, and Hayes Carll, produced Love and Havoc in Nashville and brought in legendary guitarist Harold Bradley, whose recording CV includes Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash sessions, to play on two tracks. During their stay in Nashville the band were also invited to play at the Grand Ole Opry and top bluegrass venue the Station Inn. They play Bungalow, Paisley on Saturday, a house concert in Edinburgh on Sunday and Catstrand, New Galloway on Tuesday, March 21.

FINGER-picking guitarist Claude Bourbon is on a tour that takes him in and out of Scotland throughout March, visiting The Swallow Theatre, Whithorn on Thursday and Eyemouth Hippodrome on Friday. Bourbon, pictured, specialises in medieval and Spanish blues, lists his influences as ranging from JS Bach to JJ Cale and has shared stages with musicians including Dutch guitar hero Jan Akkerman and former Miles Davis saxophonist Steve Grossman. He returns to play a house concert in Edinburgh on Monday 20th before appearing at Junction Café, Lochwinnoch as part of the Lochwinnoch Festival on Thursday 23rd.

MULTI-instrumental duo Travelling by Tuba play three concerts for Argyll & Bute Concert Tours during the week beginning March 13. Chris Cranham and Stewart Death have taken their tuba, conch shell, didgeridoo, sackbut, cornet, posthorn, serpent, sousaphone, hoseaphones and other instruments from around the world to venues throughout the UK since getting together in 1991. Their repertoire ranges from classical to jazz and includes humorous anecdotes and informative chat as well as a four-and-a-half-minute version of Bizet’s Carmen. They appear in Bowmore on Islay on Thursday, March 16, Rothesay (Friday 17th) and Dunoon (Sunday 19th).

BIRNAM Arts Centre brings traditional music, theatre, opera and jazz to Highland Perthshire during March. The venue hosts the annual celebration of local fiddler-composer Niel [correct spelling] Gow’s legacy over the weekend of March 17 to 18 and presents singer Horse McDonald’s autobiographical play, Careful on Friday 24th. There is a screening of the Royal Opera production of Hector Berlioz’s Les Troyens on Sunday 26th and the New Focus Duo, featuring pianist Euan Stevenson and Scottish National Jazz Orchestra saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski, plays music from the pair’s latest album, New Focus on Song alongside new interpretations of jazz standards from Duke Ellington and other sources on Friday, March 31.
