YOUNG Argyll-based band Heron Valley play a series of festival gigs over the summer to mark the release of their first album, Roam. The band formed at school and came to the attention of Daniel Gillespie, a founding member of popular West Highland folk-rock band Skerryvore and now managing director of Oban Live and Tiree Music Festival, at a village hall gig in Arrochar. He has since booked them for Tiree Music Festival 2016 and 2017 and tips them to follow in the successful footsteps of Skerryvore. They play Butefest on July 28 and Eilean Dorcha Festival, Benbecula on July 29 before going on to Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Mull of Kintyre Festival, Gig at the Gathering in Dunoon, Cowal Games, Best of the West in Inverary, Tarbert Music Festival, and Jura Music Festival. heronvalleyband.co.uk
BRIDGE Music, the organisation founded by the late drummer and dedicated jazz promoter Bill Kyle, continues its series of concerts at Swing in Glasgow during July when Glasgow-based saxophonist Brian Molley, pictured, joins guitarist Joe Williamson’s quartet on Friday 21. Molley, who recently returned from an Indian tour, has been described by Jazzwise magazine as One to Watch and released his second album, Colour and Movement earlier this year. He is followed on Friday 28 by Canada’s A/B Trio, featuring drummer Thom Bennett, saxophonist Dan Davis and bassist Josh McHan, who play jazz in the style of Sonny Rollins and Joshua Redman.

EDINBURGH music promoters Soundhouse add to their ten-night Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival run at the Traverse Theatre with three further concerts during July. Australia’s Spooky Men’s Chorale present a performance they themselves describe as “equal parts monk, Visigoth and village idiot” at La Belle Angele on Wednesday, July 19. Orkney’s rocking folk ensemble The Chair follow them at the same venue on Friday, July 28 and singer-flautist Nai Barghouti and clarinettist Mohamed Najen & Friends present Palestinian jazz at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday, July 29.

JAZZ at Hospitalfield celebrates twenty-seven years of jazz promotions in Arbroath with four more concerts scheduled before the end of 2017. Parisian swing styled quartet Rose Room appear on July 22 followed by a cappella group the Oxford Gargoyles on August 19. Former Average White Band saxophonist – and Montrose native - Molly Duncan teams up John Burgess for a two tenors gig featuring Paul Harrison on organ and Doug Hough on drums on September 23, and drummer Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra appears in a Jazz at Hospitalfield birthday gig on October 21.
