Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 3609 prime hoggs in Lanark on Monday to a top of £98.50 per head and 221.6p per kg to average 164.8p (-14.5p on the week).

A large show of 661 cast sheep saw heavy ewes sell to £150.50 for a Texel and average £82.02, while light ewes peaked at £75.50 for a Blackface and levelled at £44.40.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 8 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of 243p per kg and an average of 229.8p.

The rough ring was the scene of the dearest trade so far this season with 42 beef cows selling to £1290 per head and 187.3p per kg to average 138.1p, while 99 dairy cows peaked at £1330 and 176.1p to level at 115.2p.

The firm also held its monthly sale of beef-breeding cattle. Top prices and averages: Cows with calf-at-foot to £1300 and averaged £1188 for 4; in-calf cows £1400 and £1091.33 for 16; bulling heifers £1580 and £1095.32 for 80.

There were also 12 dairy cattle forward that sold to £1650 for a second-calved Holstein Friesian and averaged £1109.
