AN upmarket Edinburgh property developer has unveiled plans to build canalside homes on a former industrial site in the Fountainbridge area of the city.
Glencairn Properties is seeking permission to build 43 apartments with commercial space by the Union canal opposite a site which housed a giant brewery run by the former Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.
Owned by Darryl and Barry Teague, Glencairn said the proposal fits with the local development plan, which involves the comprehensive redevelopment of what was an important industrial area.
Glencairn’s proposal includes 13 affordable apartments, in line with guidance in the plan for 25 per cent of all new housing of 12 units or more to be affordable.
Darryl Teague said: “There’s a higher mix of student, office and proposed private rental sector development in this particular area of Fountainbridge. What are we proposing is to help to create more of a community by establishing increased opportunity for residential ownership.”
On its website, Glencairn says it specializes in luxury urban residences for families and professionals.
Mr Teague noted that with traffic issues in mind the plans included limited parking space. Glencairn may include spaces for the city car club to discourage car ownership.
