UK retail sales volumes rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.3 per cent in August, defying economists’ forecasts of a 0.2% fall, official figures show.
The overall increase was driven by sales in the non-food category, which showed a 1.2% month-on-month rise. Food sales volumes fell 0.6%, the Office for National Statistics data show.
