A SPEYSIDE gin distiller has moved to give consumers more opportunity to try its products by introducing gift size bottles for two of its hand-crafted spirits.

Elgin-based Moray Distillery said the launch of its Scottish and navy strength gins, which it markets under the Avva brand, will allow drinkers the chance to sample premium products at more affordable prices. Moray also said the 20cl mini bottles, which it launched at the Royal Highland Show over the weekend, will go down well with convenience and specialist drinks stores because they ease space constraints.

Gin is one of the fastest-growing categories in the drinks industry, with products being brought to the market by more than 40 gin distilleries in Scotland. UK gin sales topped £1 billion for the first time last year.

Moray, which is thought to be the only distiller in Scotland using a Scottish-manufactured copper still, has been producing gin since last July.

Founder Jill Brown, who devised the mini bottles with accountancy firm Johnston Carmichael, said: “After reviewing market research and undertaking their own analysis – which included visiting lots of supermarkets and keeping an eye on competitors - the Johnston Carmichael team suggested that smaller bottles would be a good way to get more customers to try our gins.

“Bottling research shows increasing demand for 10cl and 20cl bottles. Consumers want to access premium products at an affordable price.”

Adam Hardie, head of food and drink at Johnston Carmichael, said: “Working with Moray Distillery has been really exciting for us and it has been encouraging to see it grow.

“The new bottle sizes will appeal to drinkers who are keen to try something special either for themselves or as a gift for family or friends.”
