MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd sold 1,550 prime hoggs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £164 per head and 337p per kg to average 279.9p (+47.6p on the week). From the beginning of the sale right through to the end, all types of hoggs were very easy to cash with the final average levelling at a hefty £115.30 per head. Blackface hoggs topped at £136.50 and 306p to average 266.5p.
The firm also had 422 cast sheep forward that once again met a sharper trade on the week with heavy ewes selling to £162.50 for a Texel and averaging £95.25, while light/export-type ewes peaked at £93 for Blackfaces and levelled at £70.52.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 42 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 262p per kg and an average of 226.7p (-1.2p), while 17 prime bullocks peaked at 239p and levelled at 225.9p (+5.9p).
In the rough ring 39 beef cows averaged 149p (no change).
There were also 777 prime hoggs that sold to £176 and 369.9p to average£137 and 288.8p (+37.8p).
The 259 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £165 for Hampshires and average £101, while light ewes peaked at £127 for Cheviots and levelled at £67.
The firm also sold 18 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 238.5p and an average of 212.5p (+9.8p), while 38 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 231.5p and levelled at 210.2p (+14.3p). A couple of prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 165.5p and averaged 164p (no comparison). Forty-eight prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 243.5p and averaged 192.4p (-17.3p), while 59 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 186.5p and levelled at 163.2p (-12.3p).
In the rough ring 123 beef cows sold to 204.5p and averaged 147.1p (+16.2p), while 226 dairy cows peaked at 150.5p and levelled at 115.8p (-0.6p). Ten bulls sold to 202.5p and averaged 158.2p (+43.7p).
There were also 1867 prime hoggs that sold to £167.80 and 366.6p to average 297p (+47.4p), while 11 prime lambs peaked at £167.50 and 369.5p to average 321.9p (+43.4p).
A nice show of 181 heavy cast ewes sold to £165.50 for a Texel and averaged £102.23, while 43 light ewes peaked at £97 for Blackfaces and levelled at £51.24.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 21 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 260p and an average of 244p (no change), while five prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 240p and levelled at 210.4p (-7.1p). Six prime, B&W bullocks sold to 174p and averaged 148.6p (+0.4p).
There were also 1941 prime hoggs that sold to £165 and 366p to average 275p (+38p).
One-hundred-and-one heavy cast ewes sold to £180 for a Texel and averaged £118.24, while 227 light ewes peaked at £102.50 for a Cheviot and levelled at £76.13.
