UK construction output grew only marginally in October, having contracted in the previous month, a key survey shows.

The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, publishing the survey, observed the balance of construction firms expecting an increase in business activity over the next 12 months had eased to its weakest since December 2012. CIPS noted employment in the sector had in October increased at one of the slowest rates seen over the past four years.

CIPS’s seasonally adjusted activity index for construction rose from 48.1 in September to 50.8 last month to signal marginal growth. The 50 mark is deemed to separate growth from contraction.

Although the housebuilding sub-sector grew, civil engineering and commercial property construction activity fell.
