AROUND 97 per cent of Scottish businesses recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce but they could do more to encourage inclusivity, a survey has concluded, writes Ian McConnell.

The survey of middle-market businesses by accountancy firm RSM, conducted by pollster YouGov, revealed that 78 per cent of firms considered themselves to be “diverse in terms of education”, while 72% believed they were “diverse by gender”.

Scottish businesses cited a better understanding of consumers, a broadening of a company’s knowledge base, and improved staff retention, attraction and well-being as key benefits of having a diverse workforce.

However, RSM noted that only 58% of respondents said they offered mandatory training to employees to enhance knowledge and awareness around diversity.

Kerri Constable, associate director at RSM Employers Services said: “The positive relationship between diversity and business commerciality is clearer than ever before. Organisations that embed inclusive cultures, put simply, are more likely to make better decisions, achieve higher returns and enjoy a more successful recruitment process. The issue of diversity is right at the forefront of the minds of millennials and the incoming generation Z in particular.”
