How will it change my life?
The smart home has been an aspiration of many for a number of years. The thought of controlling lights, heating and entertainment systems all from one device seems like the holy grail of modern living.
Sengled with their Pulse Solo have decided to go one better by combining light with sound output and wrapping it in a neat bulb-shaped package that won't look out of place in any home.
Good points?
The lights are available in either screw or pin format meaning it should fit most household light sockets. Installation is quick and easy with connection to mobile devices (Android and iOS) coming from Bluetooth and control provided by the free pulse app which has a simple design that is intuitive to operate. A dual three-watt speaker system from JBL powers the audio performance and is very impressive for a driver this size. Although not ideal for crowded spaces it will do a decent job in party emergencies.
Drawing power from the light socket allows the unit to be self-sufficient in terms of cabling. Other than the device itself and some brief instructions there is nothing else included in the packaging which is a nice change compared to other products that often pass through the office that feel like they require an engineering degree to simply unbox them.
Bad points?
The weight of the Pulse Solo at 340g is rather hefty and can make some less sturdy lamps with flexible necks prone to drooping.
The lack of different lighting colours is a bit of a missed opportunity as other manufacturers have incorporated colours which can be set to change on different beats into their products.
Best for ...
Table-top and desk lamps as the 550-lumens is more focused like a spotlight than is suitable for full room coverage.
Avoid if ...
You believe that a smart home should simplify your life and don't see multiple app usage as fitting that mantra.
