ONE of the shows at this year's Edinburgh International Festival has been cancelled.

Notes from the Field, by Anna Deveare Smith, was due to be performed at the Churchill Theatre in the city from August 6 to 18.

Now it has been cancelled, due, the festival says, to a scheduling conflict.

The one woman show by the American actress, playwright and academic will now not take place and all people who have booked tickets are to be refunded in full.

The show, the festival said, cannot be re-cast.

Ms Smith said: "I am deeply honoured by the invitation to perform my work at the Edinburgh International Festival this year, and regret that due to immovable, conflicting professional obligations, I will not be able to make this appearance and share in this wellspring of imagination.

"It is my sincere hope that in coming seasons I can."

The festival said it apologised for any "disappointment and inconvenience caused."
