The top chip shops in Scotland have been revealed today as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish and chip industry gear up to take place in London.

The nation’s top restaurants and take-aways were named as part of the National Fish & Chip Awards which will be rolling around once again in five months’ time.

Following initial judging, one of the six could find itself walking away with the coveted Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, one of 15 categories.

Now in its 30th year, ceremony organisers say the eateries represent the best in the business and should feel proud at the fact they will compete to become the number one fish and chip shop in the whole of the UK.

The top chip shops in Scotland:

1. Cromars Classic Fish & Chips, St Andrews

2. Dinos, Ayr

3. Forehill Cafe, Ayr

4. Low’s Traditional Fish & Chip, Aberdeen

5. The Real Food Cafe, Stirlingshire

6. The Wee Plaice, Largs

The above shops will now compete against 54 others from across the UK for the prestigious accolade.

They have all had their frying skills put to the test as well as being judged against vigorous criteria, including menu development and innovation, sustainable sourcing policies, staff training processes, and marketing techniques.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive at Seafish, which organises the awards, said: “The calibre of shops in this year’s top 60 is outstanding. They are a true representation of our industry and sum up perfectly why British fish and chips are, and will always be, the best in the world.”

Over the coming weeks, the shops will be whittled down to 20, and then ten, before the winner is announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 30th anniversary ceremony in London on January, 25 2018.
