THIS image of Gene Kelly on a visit to Glasgow on Tuesday, April 21, 1953 - he was looking for locations for a forthcoming MGM musical, Brigadoon - is one of the best-known images in the Herald and Times picture library.

The Evening Times’ film critic, Tom Goldie, who met him, wrote three days later: “There he was almost all alone in the April sunshine - a man who is literally idolised by millions all over the world. Dressed in a tweed coat and cap, he looked at first glance like any busy Glasgow citizen.

Then came the famous smile, and he was recognised at once by the few people in the vicinity. Two girls shook hands with him and raced off to tell their friends, a press photographer’s camera attracted more attention, and soon a group of people were crowding round for a glimpse of the celebrity. Such is stardom, but Gene Kelly takes it all in his stride.

He is the most unprecocious film star one could ever hope to meet. Comparing his attitude to that of the many other lesser lights I have met I’d say he tops the list for kindness and co-operation - or, at least, shares top place with Danny Kaye.”
