What is it?

A slimmer PlayStation 4 games console. Sony are known for revamping their consoles once they begin to look dated and that's exactly what they've done with the PlayStation 4.

The slimmer design is aimed at those wanting to experience the same powerful games console without paying through the nose.

Good Points?

The hardware runs with noticeably less noise than the original and makes for a better experience when playing quiet or suspense-filled games. Technology has made the device cheaper and smaller to produce with that saving being passed onto the consumer.

The new dual shock 4 controller provides a light strip at the top for better status visibility and negates the need to keep tilting it. All the current catalogue of PS4 games are compatible. With the new software loaded, this provides additional functionality without having to update manually.

Bad points?

Removal of the optical audio out port for connecting to Dolby digital amps and headphones is a step back in respect to flexibility.

Although the latest incarnation is billed as slim to distinguish it from the original, it's not all that much different in terms of size.

Best for ...

Those looking to replace their outdated PS3 with an affordable option.

Avoid if ...

You have an existing PS4 as the upgrades in the newer slimline model are not that drastically different to warrant ditching your old one. The new dual shock 4 controller is compatible with the older model.

Score: 8/10. A cheaper and more reliable version of the previous model.
