What is it?

A pair of retro-style over-ear stereo headphones.

Pioneer's longevity in the traditionally competitive audio market is testament to their products which more often than not offer excellent value for money.

With these latest wired over-ear headphones – the not so catchily named SE-MS5T-K – they will be hoping to see that trend continue and fight off would-be usurpers.

Good Points?

The first thing you notice when popping them on is the soft pads that surround your ears like a plump pillow. This comfort allows prolonged usage; so much so that I turned off the music source and almost forgot I was wearing them.

The sound quality is produced by a large-diameter 40mm driver which fills the ear cavities with a rich sound that seems to tail gently away from harsh bass and more towards detailed tones.

The skip track and pause functions are offered via a handy and compact one-button control on the left side.

Bad points?

The outer edges of the headphone ear units look like brushed metal but have a plastic feel which, although it keeps the weight down, also reduces perceived quality.

The simple all black unit I tested may appear bland to some eyes compared with some of the funkier models on the market.

Volume adjustment is missing on the control panel and results in an annoying reach for the music player.

Best for ...

Anyone who values sound and comfort over aesthetics on their audio devices.

Avoid if ...

The lack of volume manipulation on the control deck is a deal breaker.

Score: 8/10.
