STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

With sweeping views across the Clyde, Ben Lomond and the Trossachs, Gleddoch House commands one of the most impressive settings in Central Scotland. Nestling high in the Renfrewshire hills, the hotel has 75 en-suite bedrooms and suites and an 18-hole championship golf course for those who want to stretch their legs. A multi-million pound refurbishment at the start of this year has delivered on every level. Rooms are sumptuously decorated, especially the suites which offer that grand panoramic – and romantic – backdrop.

RELAX AND ENJOY

Chilling out at Gleddoch means kicking back your heels in the spa where you can enjoy a range of soothing Elemis and Ishga treatments. My wife opted for an hour-long Elemis facial while I plumped for a back massage with hot stones. Perfect for untangling the knots of everyday living. The spa also has a low-ambience relaxation room where you can rest up in your robes and slippers. If, however, you prefer something a little more energetic, the pool, sauna and hot tub areas are nothing less than superb.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

At the top of the hotel, the Vista restaurant lives up to its name. But it’s the food that’s really mouthwatering. The menu offers a range of quality dishes from Scotland’s larder as well as an enviable wine list. Worth trying the seared venison while the haggis, neeps and tatties also hit the mark. And you can later wind down at the appropriately-named Nineteenth bar.

NICE TOUCH

I loved the heated loungers in the pool area, so much so that after a swim and a sauna I felt myself slipping into snooze control.

ABOUT THE AREA

Set in a 360-acre estate, this historic house was once the residence of Scottish shipping magnate Sir William Lithgow. These days it keeps up appearances with excellent facilities for sporting and business types. Only a 20-minute drive from Glasgow, it’s also a short taxi ride away from Langbank station if you fancied leaving the car behind. And it’s all about location, location, location – and that picture postcard scenery.
