STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
Balbirnie House Hotel describes itself as one of the country's finest small luxury hotels. The Fife hotel boasts that it is superbly located between Edinburgh and St Andrews. This alone is perfect for those wanting a weekend away as you can visit two of Scotland's most popular destinations. The hotel is set within a Grade A listed Georgian mansion nestled in 400 acres of beautiful parkland. When I arrived the building was lit up to cater for wedding guests and looked stunning in the backdrop of the greenery which surrounds it. It was clear upon arrival that Balbirnie House Hotel is the sort of place that offers a sanctuary for you to escape the outside world and leave your troubles behind.
SLEEPING MATTERS
The bedroom I stayed in with my partner was instantly welcoming. The decor was very country and the four poster bed was a sleep haven. The room created a romantic setting for any couple but in the midst of winter, the heating was perhaps too warm.
CHANGE OF COURSE
The hotel is renowned in the local area for its dining and guests can enjoy meals at The Orangery or the Bistro. The first night we stayed, we had our dinner at The Orangery. The setting was more formal than I anticipated but the food was outstanding. I opted for the fish and chips while my partner had a steak pie which incorporated braised beef. We had ice cream for dessert. The food was the tastiest I have had at a hotel in a long time but I felt the menu did not suit the setting. The menu could have been perhaps more grand for this setting or the restaurant could work towards becoming more informal to suit its offering. The second night we had our dinner in the Bistro, which was created from the old kitchens of the house, and we were offered the same menu. The food was delicious again and the laidback setting of the Bistro suited the menu more. Breakfast came with the stay and each morning there was a generous offering which including everything from the Full Scottish to cereals and toast.
OUT AND ABOUT
During my weekend at Balbirnie I did not leave the grounds, which were magnificent and offered many walking routes for those keen on the outdoors. The weekend for me was about relaxing and escaping the city. Balbirnie allowed me to do that and I came back from my stay feeling refreshed and well-rested.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
