The spectacular Ayrshire coast is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland. Captivating views of local landmarks such as the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig can be seen from many of the beaches along the 65 miles of western facing coastline. Here are five must-visit beaches in Ayrshire and what to do once you’re there:

Ayr

HeraldScotland: Ayr Beach

Ayr is the region’s most popular beach and has been frequently visited by families on the west coast for many years. This beach has everything you could need for a fun day out with kids, including Pirate Pete’s family entertainment centre, crazy golf and play parks right next to it. Expect crowds in the summer months.

Troon

HeraldScotland: Troon Beach

Troon is bustling seaside town and the beach sits right next to some of the best cafés, pubs and restaurants in the area. It also boasts spectacular views across to the Isle of Arran and is a popular walking destination with holidaymakers. Enjoy fish and chips at the esplanade then take a stroll down the beach with an ice cream.

Turnberry

HeraldScotland: Turnberry Beach

A secluded haven situated next to the iconic Trump Turnberry resort. This beach is a great alternative to the popular, crowded beaches further north. The famous Turnberry Lighthouse is situated next to the ruins of the castle where King Robert the Bruce was born. Take advantage of this peaceful beach with a horse ride available from Turnberry Adventures.

Dunure

HeraldScotland: Dunure Beach

Dunure Beach is situated 5 miles south of Ayr and a short drive from Culzean Castle. This small beach has mainly dark sand and shingle with many rocks for kids to explore. Bring along a picnic and enjoy stunning views of  Ailsa Craig from the dramatic, ragged ruins of Dunure Castle.

Largs

HeraldScotland: Largs

Largs has a rather unusual feature for Scottish beaches – palm trees! This mainly shingle beach is located on the north side of the resort town of Largs and is easily accessible from Glasgow. The island of Great Cumbrae is just a 10 minute ferry away and Fast Boat Tours around Largs Bay are also available in the summer months.
