A dentist who has twice been forbidden from practising is to face legal action from about 600 irate patients.

Alan Morrison was struck off last week after potentially putting his patients at risk of HIV and hepatitis by using dirty equipment.

The General Dental Council’s professional conduct committee branded his behaviour “woeful”, while the lawyers representing his former patients said his actions were “unforgivable”.

Mr Morrison can apply after five years to be reappointed but he is now facing a huge legal action involving at least 600 former patients – although any payout would be met by his insurers.

A dental nurse working at his practice blew the whistle on the 53-year-old after she saw him re-using items meant for single use and failing to clean instruments.

Morrison, 53, of Mauchline, Ayrshire, was first struck off in 2005.

During a hearing last month, he also admitted handing forged documents to NHS investigators during their inquiry.

Patrick McGuire, of Thompsons Solicitors, said: “What he did in the first place was unforgivable."
