Organisers or Glasgow's christmas market have expressed their solidarity with those in Berlin following a suspected terror attack in the city.

At least 12 people have died and dozens injured after a lorry ploughed in to a Christmas market in the German capital yesterday evening.

Numerous German media reported that the suspect, who was picked up about a mile and a quarter away from the crash site, was a Pakistani citizen.

Berlin's public radio station RBB-Inforadio cited security sources saying the man entered Germany on December 31 2015.

News agency dpa, also citing unnamed security sources, reported that he arrived in Germany as a refugee in February 2016.

Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that the man was known to police for minor crimes.

Now organisers of Glasgow's christmas market have released a statement in solidarity with those in Berlin on social media.

It reads: "The Market Place team (organisers of the Glasgow Christmas Market) are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of events at the BerlinChristmas Market.

"As organisers of festive events we know the joy they bring.

"For this happiness to be so devastatingly interrupted is heartbreaking. "We send our condolences to all those affected.

"Our thoughts are with locals, visitors and traders."
