A Borussia Dortmund footballer was injured following explosions near the team bus ahead of the Champions League quarter-final match against Monaco, police in Germany said.

There were "three explosions near the team bus as they left the hotel to go to the stadium," North Rhine-Westphalia police spokesman Gunnar Wortmann said, adding: "There was one player injured inside and damage to a window."

Dortmund said the player, reported in German media to be Spain's Marc Bartra, was "in safety" and that there was "no danger in and around the stadium".

Glasgow Times:

Bartra, a 12-time Spanish international, had joined last season’s Bundesliga runners up Dortmund last summer.

The 26-year-old, who had been due to start in the match against the French club, has been taken to hospital.

Police and Borussia Dortmund officials assured supporters that they were not under threat at the stadium and that they should “stay calm” while leaving the ground.

The club said the match had been postponed until Wednesday, adding: "Thanks to everyone involved in the decision."

Stadium spokesman Norbert Dickel informed fans of the cancellation, saying that "there is no reason for panic here at the stadium".

A tweet from the German club’s official Twitter account at about an hour before kick-off at the Westfalenstadion had first alerted news of an incident.

It said: "At our bus departure, an incident has occurred. One person was injured. More information to follow."

A later tweet read: “A bomb exploded at the team bus next to the hotel. The players are safe. There is no danger at the stadium.”

Glasgow Times:

Inside the packed stadium, supporters of Monaco, which plays in the French league, chanted "Dortmund, Dortmund" in sympathy for the German side.

Dortmund also posted: "Dear supporters of @AS_Monaco_EN.

"If you need accommodation in Dortmund, please check #bedforawayfans."

Fans also rallied on social media.

ZlatanFacts posted: "Borussia Dortmund chants coming from the Monaco fans. Football will overcome anything."
