MAY I point out to Andrew Mitchell (Letters, May 9) that my letter (May 8) made no claim that the cross-border interconnectors would disappear in the event of independence. My topic was focused on the economics of electricity costs and as European Legislation means that Scotland cannot export the subsidy bill to foreign consumers in England, then the renewable green levy would increase by a factor of 12.5 once the English no longer paid 92 per cent of the current bill. That would be an additional figure of around £840 per house-hold per year.

Has Mr Mitchell ascertained the impact of this cost on the 40 per centof Scots living in fuel poverty – especially when MSPs pledged to eliminate such poverty by 2016?
