1956 - Born in Glasgow.

1975 - Is signed for St. Mirren by Sir Alex Ferguson despite training with Rangers. Makes first team debut at Love Street aged 19.

1983 - Ferguson takes the midfielder to Aberdeen.

1987 - Moves to Celtic in a £75,000 transfer after helping the Pittodrie club win two Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup in the space of four seasons. Scores the winner on his Old Firm debut.

1988 - Helps Billy McNeill’s side win a Premier League and Scottish Cup double in the Parkhead club’s centenary season.

1990 - Joins Kilmarnock after winning two Scottish Cups and one Premier League title in three years at Celtic.

1992 - Becomes player/coach at Hamilton.

1993 - Returns to Kilmarnock.

1994 - Retires from playing after scoring over 100 top flight goals. Follows Tommy Burns back to Celtic and becomes his assistant manager.

1995 - Helps the Glasgow club end a six year trophy drought by lifting the Scottish Cup.

1997 - Manages Celtic in a caretaker capacity for three games after Burns leaves before departing himself. Is appointed Morton manager.

2001 - Takes over as St Johnstone boss.

2004 - Is appointed Queen’s Park manager.

2006 - Celebrates as the Spiders enjoy an historic League Cup win over his former club Aberdeen.

2007 - Steers the Glasgow amateur club to promotion out of the Third Division via the play-offs.

2008 - Takes over as Scotland Under-21 manager.

2012 - Steps up to become Scotland interim boss after Craig Levein is sacked. Enjoys 2-1 win over Luxembourg. Returns to being under-21 manager when Gordon Strachan is brought in.

2014 - Resigns as under-21 manager.

2015 - Becomes assistant to Darren Young at Albion Rovers.

2017 - Leaves Cliftonhill. Named manager of Lowland League club East Kilbride.
