NEIL MCCANN has had two prominent careers and both involved him being verbally abused by complete strangers.
The Dundee manager was a target as a player by opposition fans and if anything that got worse when he became the man off the telly.
McCann expects this trend to continue in his new job, not that he will lose any sleep over it.
“Listen, it’s water of a duck’s back,” he said. “When you play wide left you are right next to every fan who is moaning. I’ve had all sorts of shouts thrown at me.”
McCann is confident of hanging on to Scott Bain this summer after the goalkeeper told him he is happy at Dens Park.
Bain knocked back the chance of a new deal under previous manager Paul Hartley and told McCann’s predecessor he wanted to move on.
Approaching the final year of his contract, the 25-year-old has been tracked by Celtic and linked with interest from MK Dons manager Robbie Neilson.
McCann said: “Scott is really happy here and he’ll say that himself if you speak to him. He seems really happy. He’s looking absolutely fantastic in training.
“In terms of his contract, I haven’t really discussed that with him yet. I’ve told him I’m aware of his contract situation and I have told him I would love to keep him.
“There’s so much going on at the minute, so it has been really relaxed.
“The one thing I wanted to get from him is if he’s happy here and I was met with a resounding yes.
“I was delighted with that and that means there’s no rush to do anything.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
