FORMER Celtic midfielder Kris Commons is determined to return to the pitch as soon as he can following a back operation.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after ending a six-and-a-half year spell with the Parkhead club at the end of last season.

On Wednesday, Commons posted pictures from his hospital bed after going under the knife to fix a problem with his back.

The former Derby County and Nottingham Forest man insisted he is intent on pulling his boots back on once he's recovered, but admitted his next destination remains a mystery.

"Finally got this back sorted," he wrote.

"12 months of pain hell and too many lows to talk about. Hoping to be back on the park asap...who with????? Even I don't know but I'm so hungry to get back to what I'm best at. Football and tap ins."

Commons joined Celtic from Derby in January 2011 and went on to make more than 200 appearances in green and white, winning five league titles, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup.

Injury restricted his playing time last season, but he scored twice in five Championship games during a loan spell with Hibs between December and January.
