ANY school pupil who opened their exam results yesterday to see the letter ‘A’ beside the word ‘English’ will know that if someone has said anything better than you ever could, you quote them.

Which is why I’m going to borrow, or if you prefer nick, a line from a colleague who on Saturday came out with something so profound that Confucius would have been well chuffed and all that with it.

“Scottish football is a difficult watch but a brilliant read.” That sums up our game in the shell of a nut.

If the season were to stop tomorrow we would have enough truly bonkers moments to fill a 20-page Christmas A to Z.

There has been Belfast, banners, bans, a bush (as in Pedro Caixinha standing in one), bad results (such as Rangers’ worst ever), Barrie (that’s McKay who believes he was treated as no human should be – he should watch Sophie’s Choice) and bottoms, boobs and bits.

That last one is in reference to perhaps the best story of them all, the official website of Inverness Caledonian Thistle liking on Twitter a pornographic picture and then a screenshot of said image appearing on the website.

That’s just the Bs. What is it is going to be like when we get to K and Kyle Lafferty is properly warmed up? We might not have crazy money in Scottish football but we do make up for that with our own brand of crazy.

And now we are at C which stands for Cathro, Ian; one-time bright young head coach of Hearts and now unemployed.

On Thursday, two days after Cathro got the bullet, Celtic held their usual weekly press conference and, of course, Brendan Rodgers was asked his opinion about what had been going on at Tynecastle. It would have been bad journalism not to pose the question, especially as Hearts were his next opponent.

Rodgers gave an honest answer, backed Cathro and took a bit of a dig at Craig Levein, without naming the Tynecastle director of football, and passed comment on how things were run which, by the way, is the opinion of most Jambos I know.

Was he a bit out of order? Perhaps a touch but please spare me the bedwetters who jump up and down in uncontrollable anger because a fully grown man replied to a question.

Jon Daly, the interim head coach of Hearts, took great umbrage to Rodgers’s words calling them “disgusting” among other things.

They weren’t disgusting. Child poverty is disgusting. But Daly was well within his rights to have a go back and those Celtic fans who got onto their keyboards quicker than you can say ‘faux outrage’ to castigate a man who was defending his own club can do one as well.

Think about it. This is a great story, albeit perhaps not as serious as North Korea building nuclear bombs, but in our little world it’s smashing entertainment.

And please spare me the old ‘a manager shouldn’t talk about another club’ narrative. This is still a free country and if you were offended by what either Rodgers or Daly said then you live a more sheltered life than a Trappist Monk.

Scottish football is not as bad as people make out but, as we all know, there are times when the fare served up on the pitch isn’t great.

That’s why we need people to speak their minds, to argue, slaughter and add to the gaiety of life. It’s sort of what makes the game up here what it is. You know, mental.

Last season, Caixinha spoke about Aberdeen’s cycle being over, I still don’t quite understand what he meant, and Derek McInnes shot back that he should concentrate on being a good Rangers manager. A saucer of milk for both of you.

It’s entertainment. Pure and simple. If none of this went on, if everyone kept their mouths shut or didn’t look at dirty pictures on social media then what are we left with?

In these very pages, Tam McManus and Steven Thompson offer up their thoughts on the week’s issues and are criticised for it. Same goes for pundits such as Chris Sutton, Michael Stewart and Kris Boyd, all of whom are routinely told to shut up by the faceless keyboard warriors who think so little of their opinions that the write 3000 words about them.

Folks, let us all embrace the bampottery. It’s one of the best things we have. Bless us.

And another thing

TOMMY Wright is wrong to say his St Johnstone team don't get any or at least enough credit.

Indeed, the Northern Irishman is one of the most respected figures in the game; certainly in they eyes of the media.

The job he has done and continues to do at McDiarmid Park is phenomenal.

Wright was annoyed at comments made by Kris Boyd who essentially said St Johnstone were good at the darker arts which helped them win matches.

Boyd has a point. It's not that men from Perth don't have good players, they do, but they are masters are doing all they can to eek out to get draws and wins which other sides fail to do.

Boyd described this as being street-smart. I say it's good tactics and clever coaching.

Big Tommy knows what he's doing
