IAIN AD Mann (Letters, August 10) suggests that cyclists who are careful and considerate should be allowed to cycle on footways. For too many cyclists, the terms “careful” and “considerate” seem unknown and they regard it as their right to cycle wherever and whenever they please.

It is a shame our police do not take the same attitude to abuse by cyclists of the Highway Code as was the case 100 years ago. In From Our Archives (August 7), we read that 28 cyclists were fined between five and 10 shillings “owing to the numerous complaints that had been made” regarding cycling on the footway.
