HUMAN rights lawyer Aamer Anwar has described suffering emotional flashbacks of the moment he fled for his life as the Barcelona terrorists ploughed into crowds of tourists.

The lawyer, who is also rector of Glasgow University, had just passed the spot where the van hit the crowd, killing 13.

Mr Anwar said: "You find yourself breaking down at points you don’t expect to break down.

"I normally consider myself to be quite strong but the emotions come and go.

"At different times when I find myself in my home you keep replaying the picture again and again.

"As the hours go past there is a feeling of guilt.

"I keep remembering the empty prams, I keep remembering the screams."

He also said: "I remember just walking down Las Ramblas and enjoying the scene, where every race creed and religion was represented.

"I was there without my children but I kept looking at a children enjoying themselves and not knowing how they are, how their families are, just little things keep coming back.

"I can’t get the sound of this mother who was screaming hysterically because she had lost her children, not knowing what happened, out of my mind."

He was also supported by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon after being trolled by right-wing abusers.

He said: "Normally I would not respond. In my line of work as a lawyer I would not normally respond but his time round I have called it out because it does bring you to tears and I don’t see where my family is petrified, terrified, worried for me, my friends and my family, that they should have to see such abuse."

Ms Sturgeon tweeted: "The far right abuse that @AamerAnwar has suffered since the Barcelona attack is sickening. His dignity stands in contrast to their hatred."
