THE Citizens Theatre in Glasgow has received a grant to carry out the first major clean of an historic part of its auditorium in the Category B listed building’s 140-year history.

The famous theatre has received a grant of more than £4000 from the Theatres Trust.

The fund is to clean an area above the theatre's Grade Category B listed auditorium which "has not been touched since the theatre first opened."

A team from Balmore Contracting Ltd has been engaged to carry out the first extensive clean of the theatre's dome and to remove 140 years’ worth of dust and debris.

The building at 119 Gorbals Street, now home to the Citizens Theatre, was built in 1876 and opened as Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1878.

The Citizens Theatre will soon begin a major £19.5m theatre redevelopment project, with work expected to begin in Summer 2018.

Lesley Davidson, general manager of the theatre, who is overseeing the project said: “I’m extremely grateful to the Theatres Trust for their support for this project.

"Our staff have worked closely with Balmore to ensure that the fabric of our building is cared for while this work has been carried out. I’m delighted that we’ve taken this step to care for our theatre’s heritage."
