CRAIG GORDON: Virtual spectator, with the most difficult thing he had to deal with in the opening 75 minutes being a wild backpass from Berra, which he controlled superbly to be fair. Good save late on from Effiong. 6
KIERAN TIERNEY: Looked a little uncomfortable at times in the first half at right-back, but grew more into the game and pushed forward more after the break. Solid showing as ever. 6
CHRISTOPHE BERRA: Gave Hampden a heart attack with a punt back to Gordon, but had the fans excited for the right reasons as he rose well to head the opener. Comfortable enough. 6
CHARLIE MULGREW: Made some important challenges in the first half and had a decent battle with Effiong, but injured early in the second and replaced by Hanley. 6
ANDY ROBERTSON: Constant threat down the left and set up the second Scotland goal for Griffiths with composed ball into the centre. Forming good understanding with Phillips. 7
SCOTT BROWN: Skirted the suspension tightrope in a couple of clashes with Effiong, and was perhaps fortunate to avoid a booking for trip on the Maltese striker. Kept things ticking over in the middle, but had a few wayward passes. 5
JAMES MCARTHUR: Struggled to get to grips with the game and was lucky to escape a booking and suspension with a stray elbow. Perhaps the motivation behind his half-time departure for Morrison. 5
MATTY PHILLIPS: Didn’t always have the end product he was looking for, but strong running and direct play caused problems. Missed a good late chance, blazing over, but Scotland now have real pace and power down the left. 7
STUART ARMSTRONG: Dynamic runs from midfield are a transformative feature of Scotland’s play, and he used them to good effect once again. Might have had a goal after arriving late in some good positions, but a good night’s work. 7
JAMES FORREST: Played inside Tierney for most of the night and had a couple of decent sights of goal, drawing fine save from Hogg on one occasion. Ran up some blind alleys and failed to get his head up at times, but not a bad showing. 6
LEIGH GRIFFITHS: Another wicked corner delivery brought the opener for Scotland and he tapped in the second from a suspiciously offside-looking position. Picked up an injury after a lung-bursting run with 20 minutes to go and withdrawn as a precaution. 7
SUBSTITUTES
JAMES MORRISON: On for McArthur at the interval and was neat and tidy in possession, and tried to make positive forward passes. 6
GRANT HANLEY: On for the injured Mulgrew early in the second half and slotted in on the left-centre of defence. Coped well enough. 5
CHRIS MARTIN: Given the last 20 minutes in place of the injured Griffiths and had a couple of nice touches. 4
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
