PLANS are being drafted up to market Scotland's world-class bridges to film industry scouts as on-location sites for major movies.
Tay Screen, which promotes Fife and Tayside to movie and television companies, is advertising the bridge, and in particular its older neighbour, the Forth Road Bridge, as a potential location for films and TV programmes.
The screen agency says that all the bridges in the region "all offer great possibilities as film locations and have, over the years, featured in many film and TV productions – mostly as part of the view but sometimes involved in the action."
It notes that "we happen to think that some of greatest views are from the Fife side including at North Queensferry."
The agency says that a long programme of work and change lies ahead for the old Forth Road Bridge and "its availability as a film location is certainly under consideration."
The Forth Road Bridge use as a location will now be more feasible for production companies, as its use by major car traffic is reduced, with the new Queensferry Crossing becoming the way travellers by car cross the Firth of Forth.
Cars and lorries are due to cross for the last time on the older bridge this week, when the bridge will close to become a “public transport corridor” by November.
It is believed this could lead to the bridge being more able to be used as a film location with greater access for crews and productions.
A programme of work is also scheduled to take place in 2018 to replace expansion joints in both towers along with replacing the truss end links.
The region covered by the screen agency has at least eight key bridges, including bridges at Montrose and the Tay Bridges.
The agency notes: "At Dundee there are the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966 and the Tay Bridge, the famous rail bridge that cross the Tay Estuary over to Fife.
"The Tay Road Bridge provided a key location for BBC forensic crime drama Silent Witness story 'In a Lonely Place".
Fife, Perthshire and Tayside have attracted several productions over the years, including The Railway Man, Under The Skin, Captain America, The Stone of Destiny and The 39 Steps, among others.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
