Oliver Burke is delighted to have proved the nation’s naysayers wrong by leading Scotland’s under-21 side to victory over the much-fancied Dutch on Tuesday night, saying that people are too quick to put down our young talent.

Perhaps not even the most diehard Scotland supporter had faith that Scot Gemmill’s young side could produce such an impressive performance, with Burke and Stevie Mallan scoring in what was a comfortable win in the end.

And the under-21 skipper believes that the nation’s young talent has now proven they can cut it among the best, and they should be given the credit that their ability deserves.

“I believe young Scottish players are judged far too much,” said Burke, who recently completed a £15 million move to West Brom from RB Leipzig.

“We have a very good and talented under-21 team and throughout the younger generation. We are misjudged a little bit but people have to come and watch us play and they can see themselves that we have talent.

“It’s the perfect start and I’m so chuffed for the boys. It was a great shift and a great start so I hope we can now carry things on.

“We have a top team, we have talent all over the park and we just need to make sure it continues coming together. We are still knitting as a group but you can tell already after a week of training that we have a great chemistry within the squad.

“It was amazing to lead the side to a win which is the main thing and we need to continue the success.

“We have to keep it going and working hard. We showed a maturity and a togetherness as a team but we need to stay focused and look ahead to the next task which is against England. We need to keep pushing.”

Netherlands coach Art Langeler tipped the young Scots to be in the qualification shake-up along with his own side and England, who are also in the group, and Burke doesn’t see why that shouldn’t be the aim.

“We are all very positive and we want to qualify just as every other team in the group does,” he said.

“I feel we have a very good chance, especially with that first win and gaining a clean sheet.

“There is a feelgood factor as all of the Scotland teams at all age groups are doing well at the moment and it’s a good feeling.

“We are all guns blazing for England (in the next game). We are all very happy and the changing room is very lively and we are all looking forward to the next game.”

Burke himself is looking to rediscover his mojo after a frustrating, if worthwhile, stint in the Bundesliga, hoping that his move to West Brom and a return to British football can help him fight his way back into Gordon Strachan’s thoughts for the senior Scotland side.

“I’m just very happy to be playing and it’s about getting my confidence back as I haven’t been playing much,” he said.

“I’m delighted to be back in England as it’s what I know. I’m just looking forward to kick starting things again now.

“I have my eye set on the A squad but I need to concentrate on helping these guys in the under-21 team and that’s my priority.”
