RANGERS boss Pedro Caixinha reckons a link-up with Mexican side Chivas would be beneficial for both parties going forward.
The Portuguese met Chivas chief Jose Luis Higuera during his trip to Glasgow last week and an arrangement between the clubs has been muted.
Midfielder Carlos Pena made the move from Guadalajara to Glasgow in the summer, while compatriot Eduardo Herrera arrived from Pumas.
Chivas are keen to expand their portfolio outwith Mexico and Caixinha is open to a working arrangement being put in place with the Liga MX outfit.
He said: “I can tell you that the CEO of Chivas, Jose Luis Higuera, visited us. Carlos Pena came from there.
“Chivas and the majority of Mexican clubs are trying to expand. Chivas is the biggest club in Mexico and the fan base is something like 40million.
“They are a huge club in Mexico and they spread it to the USA and are trying to buy some clubs in South America but they want to extend the connections in Europe.
“They might be looking for us to do it and it will be a very good chance for us to do it and it’s a good chance for a win-win relationship for both clubs.
“It would bring a lot of benefits to us. Knowledge, young players moving from one side to the other and maybe first team players as well and also exchange trips for coaches.
“There are so many opportunities. They are very strong in the marketing area because they work like in the USA so we can learn from each other.
“They have a fantastic annual international youth tournament and the presence of Rangers in that tournament - playing against the best teams in the world - could be important.
“It’s still only one visit and one discussion and I’m not the one who will make the decision. The board will do that but I put the two parties in contact.”
Rangers return to action after the international break when they host Dundee this weekend as they aim to build on their win over Ross County last time out.
But Caixinha has already started planning for the next Premiership shutdown after holding discussions with Benfica over a glamour friendly in Canada.
Rui Vitoria’s side are seeking opposition for their annual Eusebio Cup clash and Rangers could now follow in the footsteps of the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Ajax and go head-to-head with the Portuguese giants.
Caixinha said: “It is very close to being done. But it is not done yet so I don’t want to get to deep into that situation.
“But yes, it is a possibility for us to play with them in the Eusebio Cup in the next international break.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
