BRENDAN Rodgers last night declared Celtic are in perfect shape for the visit of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week after watching them brush aside Hamilton 4-1.

A Stuart Armstrong strike, a Scott Sinclair double and a goal from Odsonne Edouard on his debut ensured the Scottish champions won comfortably in their first game back after the international break.

The victory at the SuperSeal Stadium put the Parkhead club jump a point above Aberdeen, who play Hearts at Murrayfield this afternoon, at the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership table.

Rodgers's men will face a far sterner challenge on Tuesday night when Celtic host Saint-Germain, who will field their world record £198 million signing Neymar up front, in their opening Group B match.

However, the Northern Irishman was satisfied with how his team performed on their return to action and is now looking forward to the visit of Unai Emery's men.

"We leave here with a great confidence boost," he said. “We made it look very simple, but we worked very hard. Now we go on to take on one of the best teams on the planet. That’s going to be an exciting game for us

"But this was great preparation mentally and physically. Tonight was a big game for us. It might not have been for others but it was for us. There might not have been so many people watching us tonight, but the world will be watching on Tuesday.

“But the biggest game is the next game. We wanted to win it and win it well to take the confidence in to the next one.

Rodgers was pleased that Edouard, the 19-year-old striker who has joined on loan from Saint-Germain until the end of the season, netted and Patrick Roberts, the winger who has returned from Manchester City on loan, also featured.

“Odsonne’s only 19 but he has all the physical attributes and speed I want," he said. "Pat was just needing some game time and we needed to manage that. That gives him good preparation for Tuesday.

“I am very happy with my squad. If you look at the level tonight, the ideas and comfort they have. The squad is very strong and whatever team I play will do well."

Leigh Griffiths was rested due to the calf strain he picked up in the Scotland game against Malta on Monday night, but Rodgers is confident he will be fit for Tuesday night.

"The message from the medical team is Griffiths should be okay," he said. "I expect him to train Sunday or Monday at the latest."

Martin Canning, the Hamilton manager, praised both Celtic for the quality of football they produced and his own players for scrapping for the whole 90 minutes.

"It was disappointing, but Celtic were excellent," he said. "In the first half there were as good as I’ve seen them. Their one touch football and movement was just too much for us.

“(Scott) Sinclair and (Patrick) Roberts in particular caused us all kinds of problems. Their movement and the shape with the 3-4-3 was a real problem for us.

“We changed it in the second half and it wasn’t pretty, but you have to try to stop Celtic when they have that quality.

“I asked them not to lose the second half so I was pleased to get the goal late on and we can take a lot from that period. It would have been easy to throw the towel in at 3-0 down at half-time, but the guys are always very honest.”
