LEIGH GRIFFITHS admitted it was a dream come true to break his Champions League in the sensational win in Anderlecht.

And he didn’t rule out Celtic finishing second in Group B, which would be one of the most remarkable achievements in the club’s history given they are in with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain who beat the Germans 3-0.

It was another game and another goal for the striker who even with Moussa Dembele fit again is looking un-droppable right now.

His opener in the win was his first ever group stage goal and on a night when he had to do a lot of chasing and closing down, it was another fine performance from players how keeps who continues to improve.

Griffiths said: “In terms of importance that goal was up there with my two for Scotland against England. I always want to score whether it’s for Celtic or Scotland.  I was buzzing to score my first Scotland goals and I’m delighted to have scored my first Champions League goal and hopefully I can kick on now.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for that. It was a great ball from Kieran Tierney and I was in the right place at the right time to tuck it away at the back post.

“It was like a slow motion moment when the ball came over and it was just about getting it on target and if you do that then you score.

“You’ve seen it before with those kind of opportunities where the ball bobbles up in front of you or you can miscue it and put it wide or over the crossbar.  I’m thankful that I put it in the back of the net. You need opportunities and my chances were limited against Paris Saint-Germain.

“But this isn’t about me - it’s about the team. The result is massive and a massive step from the last game. These boys are capable of coming to places like this and putting on a performance like that. We were always going to be up against it against PSG.”

How Celtic did against Anderlecht was always going to the difference between third and fourth place.

Griffiths and his team-mates was to avoid defeat and so to score three times and keep a clean sheet in the Belgian capital was far beyond most expectations.

The Celtic man said: “The games that mattered most were always going to be the ones against Anderlecht and to win away from home in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2012 is amazing.

“It’s a big result for us and hopefully we can kick on now. But finishing second is going to be very tough and we’ll up against it against Bayern Munich home and away.

“But we’ve got points on the board now so we need to keep battling away and if we get something in Germany then brilliant but our main objective is European football after Christmas.

“We’re off and running now and we won’t concede second place yet because we go into every game to win home or away, regardless of the opposition.

“Shocks can happen in the Champions League. We will prepare for that when it comes but we’ve got a big game to look forward to on Saturday as we look to finish the season strongly.

“Teams have gone to the Allianz Arena before and crumbled - the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal - so we understand the size of the task. But it’s along way off, there’s still a month to go and we’ve got big games coming up before that and we need to focus on them.”

Dedryck Boyata turned in his best ever Celtic performance in his home town.

The Belgian defender was simply outstanding in the 3-0 victory, as was his defensive partner Jozo Simunovic,

Boyata said: “Me and Jozo are working very hard together, also in training. Playing as we did today was very good for both of us. We know we’ve been having issues in that area, especially when I was injured.

“We’re working very well together. We know how hard it is to play a Champions League game and tonight was very good.

“Tonight feels like it’s all been worth it, dealing with all the injury problems I’ve had. That hasn’t been easy. But it’s special tonight and I can guarantee you that playing in the Champions League was the big thing I was thinking about.

“Fitness wise I’m not at my peak yet. But being here and playing as we, and winning, was just fantastic. It’s given me the best feeling I can have. Hopefully there’s a lot more to come from me.”
